Training with a Parent or Guardian

Florida law requires all drivers holding a learner’s license to be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least **21 years old** and occupies the front passenger seat at all times.

Driving Curfews

  • 🕒 First 3 Months: Driving is restricted to daylight hours only.
  • 🕒 After 3 Months: You may drive until 10:00 p.m. with a 21+ adult.
  • 🕒 16 Years Old (License): Restricted between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m..
  • 🕒 17 Years Old (License): Restricted between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m..

Mandatory Practice

Before applying for your intermediate license, you must complete the following:

  • 🚗 50 Total Hours: Logged driving experience.
  • 🌙 10 Night Hours: At least 10 hours must be completed after dark.
  • 📝 Parental Certification: A parent must sign the official Certification of Minor Driving Experience form.
  • 📅 12-Month Hold: You must hold your permit for 1 year with no convictions.

Teens between 15 and 17 have the option to take the Official Class E Knowledge Exam (permit test) online. If you fail the online exam three times, you will be required to take any future attempts in person at a local service center.

As of February 6, 2026, all Florida driver license knowledge and skills exams are administered exclusively in English. Translators and interpreters are no longer permitted.

You do not need a physical certificate. Once you pass the DETS course, your completion is automatically and electronically reported to the Florida DHSMV.
