Free California (CA) DMV Practice Tests – Updated for 2025

Free DMV Permit Practice Tests: Driving Test & License Prep

Brought to you by the Sonoma County Library

These practice tests are a great way to study but remember, they don't replace the official requirements for a California learner's permit. For a permit, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Age: You need to be at least 15 ½ and under 18.
  2. Driver's Ed: You must take a DMV-approved driver education course. This isn't just any course – it must be approved by the California DMV and include classroom learning (or an approved online option) and behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor.
  3. Head to the DMV: Make an appointment at your local DMV office. You'll need to:
    • Fill out the DL 44 application (you can often do this online ahead of time).
    • Bring documents to prove who you are, your birthday, and that you live in California. Check the DMV website (www.dmv.ca.gov) for the list of accepted documents – this is important!
    • Bring your Social Security number.
    • Pass a vision test.
    • Pay the application fee.
    • Pass the written knowledge test – that's where these practice tests come in handy!
    • Get your thumbprint taken.
    • Get your photo taken.

Check out the DMV website for more details.
