Florida Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training Options

In Florida, professional behind-the-wheel driver training is not required to get your license, but it can still be a great option to help you learn to drive safely and defensively. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) maintains a list of approved commercial driving schools providing behind-the-wheel training courses for new drivers.

If you choose not to take a professional driver training course, your parent or guardian can teach you to drive! You can learn and practice while accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and seated in the front passenger seat.

Remember, you’ll need to complete a total of 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving experience, at least 10 of which must be completed at night. Your parent or guardian will need to certify that you have completed the required hours. The Florida DHSMV offers resources for parents and teens to assist with your driving practice.

Completing behind-the-wheel driver training will not only help you gain confidence and experience on the road, but it will also make you a safer driver. Take advantage of the resources available to ensure you are well-prepared for your driving journey.
